As temperatures drop and families gather, we’re seeing a few common illnesses affecting kids in our community. Here’s what to keep an eye on, along with tips for keeping your little ones healthy this season.
1. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
RSV is a common virus that affects the respiratory tract, especially in babies and young children. It often shows up as cold-like symptoms but can lead to more serious issues like bronchiolitis and pneumonia, particularly in infants.
2. Influenza (Flu)
Flu season has arrived, and cases are beginning to rise. Symptoms include high fever, body aches, fatigue, and respiratory symptoms. It’s not too late to get your child vaccinated, as the flu vaccine remains the best defense.
3. Common Cold Viruses
Cold viruses circulate year-round but tend to spike in colder months. These can be mild but still cause cough, congestion, and sore throat. While there’s no cure, there are steps you can take to make your child more comfortable.
Prevention Tips:
Encourage rest, fluids, and handwashing.
Keep kids home when sick to avoid spreading it to others.

4. COVID-19 Variants
COVID-19 is still circulating, though at lower levels than before. Current variants have generally milder symptoms, but we still advise caution, particularly for high-risk individuals. Vaccines are now available for children as young as 6 months.

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that’s highly contagious and often seen in school-aged kids. Symptoms include a sudden sore throat, fever, and sometimes a rash. If your child has a sore throat with a fever, see a healthcare provider for testing.
